What are the Basic Steps of a Facial?
Treatments may vary depending on the spa you’re visiting or the type of treatment you’ve chosen. Typically, spa facial treatments consist of the following steps;
Consultation
Facials should always start with a thorough consultation. You’ll be asked to fill out a form with questions about your skin concerns, lifestyle, health history, preferences and current home care routine. If you’re using Retin-A, or dermatological products, this may affect which treatments your esthetician recommends.
Preparations
The esthetician offers a head wrap to protect your hair and a facial wrap to wear during your service. Some choose to remove all of their clothes before putting on the wrap, others leave on their undergarments. Don’t worry, the esthetician will provide you with privacy by leaving the room while you make your most comfortable spa attire decision.
Cleansing
The esthetician will start by wrapping your hair in a towel or headband to keep it dry and clean. The first step is to cleanse the skin thoroughly using cotton pads, sponges or wipes.
Skin analysis
The esthetician will look at your skin under a bright lamp or cover your eyes and look at your skin through a brightly lit magnifying lamp. The light is used to determine your skin type and whether it’s dry, oily, sensitive, combination or normal. This process is also used to identify skin conditions like whiteheads, acne, blackheads, sun-damage, dehydration, and ageing. Once the skin type and conditions are identified, the esthetician will select the appropriate products and treatments and advise you on what they recommend.
Facial Steamer
Most facials involve a machine that directs a thin fog of steam to your face. This is a soothing part of the treatment that softens blackheads and whiteheads for easy extraction. If you suffer from sensitive skin, the esthetician may choose to not use steam.
Exfoliation
This step involves either a chemical substance or mechanical exfoliation. Mechanical exfoliants have a gritty texture that eliminates the dead skin cells on the surface, this is usually completed during the steam. Chemical exfoliation uses enzymes and acids to loosen the bonds between skin cells.
Chemical peels vary in intensity and can be incorporated as part of the facial.
Extractions
This is the removal of blackheads and whiteheads, you should bear in mind that people have different pain tolerances for extractions. Some people find them extremely uncomfortable if they have thin skin.
Massage
The facial massage uses classic strokes to soothe and stimulate your skin and facial muscles.
Facial Mask

Final Step
