Top 4 Natural Skin Exfoliators

There are many ways that you can keep your skin looking healthy and young. While some of them require a great deal of time and money, others are cheap and easy skin care hacks. Exfoliation is one of those hacks. With natural skin exfoliators in your kitchen, you can keep your skin looking its best. Find out which four natural skin exfoliators are the best for your skin.

What is exfoliation?

Before you learn about the best natural skin exfoliators, you need to know what exfoliation really means. During the process of exfoliation, your skin sheds dead skin cells from the top layer of skin. The skin underneath is smoother and younger looking.

Although exfoliation is a natural process, your body might need some help. If you don’t eat right, your skin cells can’t regenerate properly. Even with proper nutrition, exfoliation slows down as you age.

Fortunately, there are natural products that can help your skin shed itself. They usually are coarse enough to rub some of the dead skin off your face. Some of them include ingredients that improve the regeneration process of your skin.

Not all coarse products work as exfoliants; they cannot be too rough. If you remove too much skin, you leave your skin vulnerable to damage. You need to be careful with which products you use on your skin and how frequently you use natural skin exfoliators.

The Best Natural Skin Exfoliators

While there are many exfoliating products in stores and online, you don’t need to look further than your home for exfoliation. In your kitchen cupboard, you might have everything that you need to make a great exfoliant. Here are some of the most effective household exfoliators:

1. Sugar mixture

For several reasons, sugar makes for a great exfoliant. First, there is its glycolic acid content. Glycolic acid is a type of alpha hydroxy – a chemical that boosts the production of new skin cells. Additionally, it smooths and softens your skin. In a granulated form, sugar is just coarse enough to remove a thin layer of dead skin cells.

Making a sugar scrub is simple. First, you need to take a half-cup of either brown sugar or white sugar. Either type works well, so use whatever you have in your pantry. Then, mix the sugar with just enough olive oil to make a paste. If you don’t have olive oil, you can also use grapeseed oil. Apply the paste to your face using a circular motion. After you let it sit for ten minutes, you can wash it off with warm water. You should notice results immediately.

2. Sugar and Honey Scrub

Why use one great ingredient in your face scrub when you can use two? While sugar is great for exfoliating, honey is equally efficient. When you combine the two together, you get a natural exfoliant that leaves your skin looking brilliant.

Honey is a great exfoliant because it makes your skin’s natural exfoliation process quicker. Additionally, honey is a humectant. This means that it draws in moisture. So in addition to exfoliating your skin, honey also moisturizes it. Both traits can make your skin look younger and healthier.

To make a honey and sugar scrub, you need to measure out one tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of brown sugar. Mix them together in a small bowl. Then, place them in a small jar with a lid for storage. If you plan to keep the scrub for a while, you should use an airtight lid and store the jar at room temperature.

When you want to exfoliate, you should first wash your face. Then, take a half teaspoon of the scrub and rub it on your face with a circular movement. Be careful not to get any in your eyes. Then, rinse it off and pat it dry.

3. Yogurt

Although it sounds simple, it works. Yogurt is the ideal exfoliant because it contains hydroxy acid. Often found in store-bought exfoliants, hydroxy acid soothes your skin. It can also even out your skin tone. Take plain yogurt, apply it to your face, and let it sit for 20 minutes. Then, rinse it off, and you’re done.

4. Papaya

Another very simple skin exfoliant is papaya. In the fruit, you can find the papain enzyme. This enzyme dissolves dead skin cells. Additionally, it can heal your skin and make age spots appear lighter.

If you have a young, green papaya, it works better as an exfoliant. Young fruits contain more papain, which makes them more effective at exfoliating. Take your fruit and mash it into a paste. Although it should be slightly thick, it should be smooth. Apply it to your face and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Then, rinse it off.

Of course, there are other ways to keep your skin looking great. After you try some of these DIY exfoliants, consider treating yourself to a facial. After all the money that you saved on store-bought products, you deserve one!
