Your Guide To Massage Therapy!
What is Massage Therapy?
During massage therapy, a trained and licensed medical professional manipulates the soft tissue of your body using varying degrees of pressure and movement. The masseuse will target muscle, connective tissue, ligaments, tendons, and skin.
Massage therapy has a long history of culture around the world. People use different types of massages for an array of health-related purposes. At Skin Apeel, our team of Boca Raton massage therapists specializes in both Eastern and Western techniques to guide clients on their personal journey to total mind and body wellness. Our Therapeutic Massage practice has evolved to blend ancient and modern techniques in wellness for a unique practice in massage therapy.
Massage may range from deep pressure to light stroking. There are many different types of massage including;
Deep massages use slow and forceful strokes to target the deeper layer of muscle and connective tissue. This is commonly used to help with muscle damage from injuries.
Sports massage is used for people that participate in sports activities to help prevent and treat injuries
This is a gentle form of massage that used kneading, long strokes, vibration, deep circular movements and tapping to help relax and energize.
Trigger Point Massage
Trigger Point Massage focuses on areas of tight muscle fibers that sometimes form in your muscles after injuries or overuse.
What are the Benefits of Massage Therapy?
The benefits of a massage at Skin Apeel in Boca Raton include reduced stress, pain, and muscle tension.
Massage is considered part of complementary and integrative medicine. Massages are offered along with standard treatments for a broad range of medical conditions and symptoms. While more research is needed to confirm the benefits of massage, studies have found that massage may also help;
- Sports Injuries
- Insomnia related to stress
- Digestive disorders
Beyond the medical benefits for specific injuries and diseases, some people enjoy massages because they encourage feelings of comfort and relaxation.
If you’re experiencing frequent or longstanding muscle pain or symptoms of disease, you should always consult with your doctor before booking your massage.
What are the Basic Steps of a Massage?
Ordinarily, you’ll be asked to lie on a massage table that’s covered by a large towel or sheet. It’s important that you’re comfortable, therefore you must tell the therapist if you’re cold, wish to be covered or don’t want an area of your body touched.
Your licensed massage therapist will only expose the area that they’re working on. If you feel uncomfortable with exposure, it’s important to discuss your concerns with your masseuse.
The therapist may play music during your session but you’re welcome to ask for a different type of music or if you would prefer quiet.
The main purpose of massage oils is to lubricate the skin, reducing friction while the therapist persons your massage. This allows their hands to smoothly glide and provide easy workability to the skin’s surface. Secondary benefits of oils nourish the skin with organic ingredients, replenishing dryness and leaves the skin hydrated. If you’re allergic to oils or lotion, tell your massage therapist beforehand.
During a hot stone massage, smooth, flat, heated stones are placed on specific parts of your body. The stones are usually made from basalt which is a type of volcanic rock that retains heat. If you’re receiving a hot stone massage, always tell the masseuse if you’re uncomfortable with the temperature of the stones.
Neck and Shoulders
Your therapist will place their hands on either shoulder in the classic massage position and knead their thumbs deep into the muscles of the shoulders. Next, they’ll make a fist with each hand and rub their knuckles gently but firmly across the tops of their shoulders to release any tension.
If you’re receiving a foot massage, your masseuse will pay special attention to the arch of your foot as this area tends to accumulate a lot of tension. Your therapist may also pay attention to the heel and ball of your foot as well as the toes.
Once they’re done with the feet, they’ll move on to the legs by giving each leg long, relaxing strokes, to begin with, all the way from the calf to the upper thigh. They’ll apply light pressure with both hands, smoothly stretching the skin. This technique is called effleurage. Next, they’ll cover the leg they’re not working with a towel and focus on massaging the calf of one leg. They’ll use a kneading technique to work the calf muscle. Once the leg is finished, they’ll cover it with a towel to retain the heat and repeat the massage on the other leg.
Lower to Upper Back
The effleurage technique will be used to perform long and soft strokes going from the top of the glutes to the base of the neck. The masseuse will place the palm of each hand on either side of the spine and work their way up, keeping their hands parallel to one another. They’ll return to the lower back and use a kneading motion to work the large muscles on either side of the spine. The side of the spine is an area that tends to build up a lot of tension
Arms and Hands
Once your masseuse has completed the lower back, they may move on to your hands and arms. They’ll hold your arm up from the bed and use their hand to sweep along the back of your forearm, along the tricep and over the shoulder, coming back on the opposite side.
Finally, the masseuse may ask you to flip over so they can work on your head and face. They’ll use their thumbs to massage the top of the scalp, moving to the folds and lobe of each ear between your thumb and forefinger. Next, they’ll use their fingertips to gently swipe along the contours of the cheekbones. To finish the massage, they’ll gently place their hands beneath your head and lift it slightly from the bed to massage the small hollows where the neck meets the base of the skull.
